After an impressive streak of seasons for the Mashpee High School Falcons baseball team, the expectations are high yet again for this season.

The Falcons come into the season after losing numerous key seniors, including Nick Carpenter, Alex Morry, Joe Mackie, and others. Those Falcons took the team to another deep playoff push, falling the Saint John Paul yet again.

However, all hope is not lost.

Coming into this season, the Mashpee Boys Basketball team was not setting its hopes extremely high. With the loss of last year's senior forward Dom Fellini and sophomore forwards Logan Grosek and Jack Gumbert, the team was expecting to be much different than in the past year.

Grosek and Gumbert accounted for the majority of the height for the Falcons in 2016-2017, and the team's remaining forwards seemed to be senior Michael Barrows and Anthony Gonsalves. Barrows has been a member of the team since his freshman season, and has provided dependable minutes in the paint. As for Gonsalves, his minutes had always been numbered, coming off of the bench his entire varsity career which did not start freshman year.

However, someone needed to step up for this Falcons squad this year, and Anthony was the man for the job.

For the Mashpee girls varsity basketball team their 2017-2018 season was anything but a disappointment, despite narrowly missing out on the state tournament.

Coming off of a rebuilding year they established a solid line up of both young players and seasoned veterans. The most prominent of these young stars include 7th grader Amiyah Peters and sophomore Ashley Keleher. They dropped 13 and 14 points respectively  in Mashpee’s decisive 50-31 victory over rival Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on February 15.

The highly popular championship of the National Football League is this Sunday between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.  This game is one of the most popular events in the country and is highly scrutinized by both fans and sports analysts.  This game is highly anticipated, especially because the Patriots are returning to the Super Bowl for a second consecutive year after last years’ extravaganza against the Falcons in which the Patriots came back to win the game.  As for their foes, the Philadelphia Eagles have not won a Super Bowl in their franchise history.  This being said, they are the heavy underdogs coming into Sunday’s game, and that has the vast majority of fans rooting for the Eagles.

Winter is approaching fast and with it comes the end of fall sports and the start of basketball, winter cheer, track and hockey. For girls basketball it will be an exciting year, as they will be getting a junior varsity coach.

As of last season, there wasn’t a JV team, only a middle school and varsity team, let alone a coach. Coach Tresca is the varsity basketball coach, but for both the JV and varsity teams to prosper, they each need to have their own coach. The new coach this year, Mary Keleher, happens to be the mother of Mashpee's own basketball all-star, Ashley Keleher.

Senior Ben Bohnenberger made the commitment to play football at Colgate University this past August. Offered a full scholarship, Ben will be a member of Colgate’s Division 1 athletic community in the fall of 2018.

Ben’s college search has been different than most students. In his junior year, he realized his passion to play, and decided to try and play college football. From then, he sent football highlight tapes to coaches. To him, the highlight tapes were important to gain exposure to college coaches. His college visits started earlier than most other people’s, and his mindset when looking at schools was a balance between education and football.

Challenges in Depth But Big Upside For Boys Soccer Next Year

6/6/2017

By Noah Tellez
Although the Mashpee boys soccer team has seen huge increase in production and record over the past few years, the Falcons are faced with a huge challenge heading into the 2017-2018 season. The squad lost a lot of depth this season, graduating seven seniors including four that started nearly every game for the Falcons.

This being said the squad only has three juniors returning, proving the team will be very young. However, the upside is outrageous, with eight sophomores returning as juniors whom now have some useful playoff experience. The future is very bright for this young squad, who are looking to return to the South Shore League Semi-finals for a second year in a row.

As for Coach Ed Furtek however, he has other goals in mind.  “What are my goals for this season?” he said. “Make the tournament. Win the Cape Cod Referees Sportsmanship Award.  Get the highest GPA of the fall sports teams. Win our half of the South Shore League.”
