For the Mashpee girls varsity basketball team their 2017-2018 season was anything but a disappointment, despite narrowly missing out on the state tournament.
Coming off of a rebuilding year they established a solid line up of both young players and seasoned veterans. The most prominent of these young stars include 7th grader Amiyah Peters and sophomore Ashley Keleher. They dropped 13 and 14 points respectively in Mashpee’s decisive 50-31 victory over rival Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on February 15.

The most prominent of these young stars include 7th grader Amiyah Peters and sophomore Ashley Keleher. They dropped 13 and 14 points respectively in Mashpee’s decisive 50-31 victory over rival Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins on February 15.
The entire year Keleher and Peters shined for the Lady Falcons leading the team in scoring and making the program’s future look strong and bright.
However, last Thursday night, both the final game of the season and the annual event commemorating the senior players, it was the upperclassmen who truly shined. Seniors Grace Whipper, Chyla Hendricks, and Brooke Bridges all has stellar games that propelled Mashpee to a victory.
Bridges did not contribute much in terms of scoring but found a way to contribute in just about every other aspect of the game. The senior captain was a force on defense and rallied multiple steals, blocks and takeaways. Pestering DY players the entire night she ensured there was not a single easy bucket given up.
Hendricks, a long time contributor to the program, played one of her best games of the season and was all over the court. Squeezing passes between defenders, and taking the ball strong to the hoop she was able to accumulate 11 points and a plethora of assists to cap off a more than respectable basketball career.
Finally, senior Grace Whipper, a relatively new member to the Basketball squad, truly emerged on the special occasion game. She was able to find another zone and have what may have been the game of her life, scoring eight very hard earned points through a barrage of layups and mid-range jumpers.
Before leaving their team in the more than capable hands of young stars, the three scrappy seniors made sure both the legacy and box score would not be overshadowed as they walked away from the court both proud victors and well respected athletes.
