Coming into this season, the Mashpee Boys Basketball team was not setting its hopes extremely high. With the loss of last year's senior forward Dom Fellini and sophomore forwards Logan Grosek and Jack Gumbert, the team was expecting to be much different than in the past year.
Grosek and Gumbert accounted for the majority of the height for the Falcons in 2016-2017, and the team's remaining forwards seemed to be senior Michael Barrows and Anthony Gonsalves. Barrows has been a member of the team since his freshman season, and has provided dependable minutes in the paint. As for Gonsalves, his minutes had always been numbered, coming off of the bench his entire varsity career which did not start freshman year.
However, someone needed to step up for this Falcons squad this year, and Anthony was the man for the job.

Gonsalves jumped into his starting spot with grace, racking triple doubles like crazy. Night in and night out he produced, rarely scoring less than 15 points per game (if ever). He emerged among a top scoring options for the Falcons, and provided electrifying bounce that sent the home faithful into shock with every breakaway slam dunk. His performance was acknowledged with the South Shore League Tobin division player of the year honor.
No matter how spectacular his stats were, Gonsalves never broke character. He always seemed to have a smile on his face, whether it was celebrating his team’s success or just walking the halls of Mashpee High.
When asked about his rise to fame and if he was surprised, Anthony said, “I’ve always been working and playing and practicing to get better and I knew I was going to get better... just another day at the office for me.”
That statement is extremely valid, and Gonsalves has always been in the gym working on his game whenever he could. Proving that hard work really does pay off, Gonsalves’ humble character seems to bode well for his post-graduation life, and this season was surely one to remember.
