For Girls Hoops Seniors, The Team Makes The Experience
By Maile Biehl
The 2021-2022 girls varsity basketball season is quickly coming to an end. Just like every season, the last home game will be the host of Senior Night. Senior night is an event that takes place prior to the game that celebrates the seniors on the team. Friends, family and teammates gather to support their seniors before their last home game. This year's girls varsity basketball senior night will take place on February 15 at 6 pm. The team will be playing Cohasset High School.
After their coach left the job in the fall, the team was unsure of where this season was going to go. The athletic department hired Jasmyn Silva to be their girls varsity coach. To the team, she is known as Coach Jazz. She has led the team in a remarkable season, standing strong with a record of nine wins and two losses.
This year, Mashpee will be celebrating seniors Ellie Mitchell, Cheyenne Hendricks and Skyla Rimple.

"Basketball has for sure given me an outlet for when I’m feeling stressed or down, as soon as I step on the court all those feelings are released.”
For every player, senior night means something different. For Skyla, it is one of the most inspiring nights, being able to hear different team members' stories and programs that they have been a part of. And for Ellie: “[It] represents all the hardships I have gone through with the sport of basketball, that everything has led to these last moments as a senior. I love this sport, my team, my coach, and can’t wait to celebrate with them.”
Cheyenne joined the MMHS Basketball program in 8th grade and has played every season. She became a swing player for the Varsity Basketball team and then joined the Varsity team as a teammate in her junior year. She shared with us some of her favorite parts of playing on the team these past years.
“My favorite part of playing basketball is probably being on my team. As much as I love looking forward to being aggressive and playing in a huge-intensity sport, I get so excited to be with my team again. We just play so well together and have such great chemistry, it makes the sport that much better.”
Skyla started playing basketball eight years ago. She has since started playing at MMHS and has been a part of the Girls Varsity team. She joined the team in her sophomore year which makes this year her third year on the team.
She described the team as a family, going on to say: “[T]he friendships and mentorships that have resulted are irreplaceable. I can never express enough gratitude to these girls, as the love they have shown me has made me love my community and the sport even more.”
Ellie started her basketball career in seventh grade and played her way through high school. In her sophomore and junior years, she played as a swing player and has played on the Varsity team this year. She has played with both Skyla and Cheyenne for all four years of high school, playing on the same team together.
Similarly to her other teammates, Ellie agrees that one of her favorite parts of playing basketball has been the team but she also shared a bit more insight into her favorite aspects of the game: “I have always loved the competition, and being a part of a close knit program. Basketball has for sure given me an outlet for when I’m feeling stressed or down, as soon as I step on the court all those feelings are released.”
While their time playing basketball has been well spent, it is their time to be celebrated as a senior and for their hard work over the past four years like the many teammates before them. After the ceremony concludes, these three seniors will join their team in playing their last home game of the season.
