As Netflix has become a leading platform for streaming both movies and shows they have developed Netflix Original Series. A popular series they released that has been attracting viewer's attention is "Mindhunter" which is based on a true story, created by Joe Penhall. Released October 13, 2017 "Mindhunter" has become a widely discussed and highly regarded series.
The show is based in 1977 and creates a very interesting narrative behind the FBI’s development of serial killer profiles. The series follows the stubborn character Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), while trying to explain the importance of creating the profiles, as he is faced with multiple obstacles. He partners with character Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) whom in many ways acts as the wise-old man archetype. Throughout the series Bill Tench keeps Holden’s ambition contained because he acknowledges they must do things a certain way to be successful and not attract intervention from the bureau.
If you are an avid viewer of shows focusing on criminal psyche, the part of the show that will interest you is Holden’s interview with incarcerated serial killers. To develop his profile on serial killers he had interviews with well-known killers responsible for heinous crimes.
The first serial killer they speak to is very important to the plot and in some ways even becomes likable. Killer Ed Kemper is eager to become friends with main character Holden, and after their chilling interview he continues to reach out. The interesting part of their interviews are the mannerisms of Ed. While you would expect someone who brutally murdered women to be aggressive, Ed is sort of well- mannered and calculated. Ed becomes very important in the finale of the show and shows the sophistication behind his trail of thought.
The show's characters mixed with the intrigue of real life serial killers makes for a phenomenal series. As the show progressed the viewers attention is really grasped until the point where you have found yourself watching 3 episodes in a row. With such an interesting ending to the first season and a close to perfect way to end a masterpiece of a season. There will be a second season that will hopefully answer all the questions that we were left with in the last episode of the first season.
