How did you become interested in audio/video?
I owned a recording studio and I used to compose music for film and TV production. I was working on a project for Boston College, and as I was working on the production the producer invited me to see his shoot. I had a great time, and slowly for about 5 years I transitioned from composing music to working as a filmmaker.
What is the best film project you’ve worked on?
It has to be one of my own. I directed 2 full length feature films: My Intuition and A Change in Times. For me those were my favorite projects. Not only did I write the scripts, I directed them as well.
What made you decide to work here?
Mashpee High School lost their audio guy and the superintendent reached out to Mashpee TV for help. They brought me in to come over and facilitate audio/video needs.
Since you work with the subject, what is your favorite film?
My favorite film would have to be Platoon.
If you weren’t working here, what would you be doing?
I would be working on film productions as a cinematographer/director.
What is life like outside of the school for you?
I don’t have much of a life outside of work, to be honest. I typically work anywhere from 10 to 14 hours a day and a lot of weekends. But I enjoy my work, I love what I do. I also love to watch my son play baseball, and my daughter does figure skating. When I’m not working, I’m filming footage for myself, just to keep in practice and trying to better myself as a cinematographer. I’ve made it a habit to film every day. I’ve been filming every day for about 10 years.
Why do you like to be called Shane instead of Mr. Kinsman?
I’d just rather be called by my first name. Maybe I’m a less formal person? I understand there’s an element of respect involved with addressing someone by their last name. But on the flip side, I’m yet to feel disrespected by people calling me by my first name.
