During the event, which will be held from 10 to 12:30 in the school gymnasium, current Mashpee seniors will be given the chance to learn about saving, spending, and budgeting based on the estimated salary of their chosen career and lifestyle choices. They will have to make serious decisions about how to apply their earnings in order to survive. During the simulation, students can pick where to live, what vehicle to drive, whether or not to pay off their student loan debt, and even smaller fiscal decisions like what phone plan to have.
For many seniors, it will be their first taste of reality before heading off to college, and the lessons learned at the Credit for Life Fair will be important for how they budget themselves in the upcoming years. Financial aid and student loans are some of the biggest problems facing young adults, and many do not realize that it will affect them for the rest of their life.
Brittany Martini, one of the seniors and managers of this event, is particularly excited about her work. “I chose my senior project, Credit for Life, because I know how important financial literacy is to our youth,” she said. “I work at SMC Business Services, a bookkeeping and accounting office in the Mashpee Commons, and I see adults go through financial difficulties that could have easily been avoided with proper education.”
Credit for Life is now an event that has grown to several schools in Massachusetts and has a long-lasting impact on how teenagers learn to transition into the real world. Everyone is very excited to see the fifth annual fair come to Mashpee.
