Xavier Gonsalves certainly exploded onto a multitude of college football coach radars in his time here at Mashpee High School. The senior defensive and offensive end has blown up numerous plays for the Falcons and made countless important catches. All of Xavier’s hard work has continued to pay off, with a new door officially opening yesterday.
On Wednesday morning, Xavier signed a letter stating his intent to play football for The University of Massachusetts, agreeing to further both his education and athletics at the school on a full scholarship. This marked the beginning of a new career on a higher level and the end of a long high school run that included three state Super Bowl victories in four years for the Falcons.
At an event in the gymnasium on Wednesday, he walked into the room with a certain swagger, and he began by thanking everyone in attendance, especially his family, friends, teammates, coaches, even the other schools that offered him scholarships. Then, he took off his jacket (gaining some chatter from the crowd because of his suit), sat down at the table with about one hundred people watching, and put the pen to paper, with applause raining from the crowd. Students of all ages and even some teachers attended the signing, showing the overwhelming support and respect that Xavier or “X” has gained throughout his years at Mashpee.
Despite his undoubted talent, Xavier remained extremely humble throughout the entire process. Aside from simply being a standout athlete and one of the tallest, strongest people around, he has always been seen as a person of great character, and the fact that he earned this opportunity reflects both aspects of his person. Everyone in Mashpee will be keeping an eye on him for years to come, and those who knows Xavier believe he will make the most of it.
