As the temperatures start to drop, a favorite high school sports season approaches: basketball season. For the Mashpee High School Boys Varsity team, most eyes are on the senior leadership that the team possesses, as well as the methodical yet exciting style of basketball they play.
The Falcons have talent all over the court, but fans should make sure they look out for Ryan Hendricks and Matt Bowen to lead the pack and put in a bid for South Shore League All Star positions.

The Falcons have talent all over the court, but fans should make sure they look out for Ryan Hendricks and Matt Bowen to lead the pack and put in a bid for South Shore League All Star positions.
Hendricks, a three year member of the varsity squad and first year captain, is a prolific point scorer averaging around nine points per game, as well as a key facilitator of the team’s play last season. Hendricks will certainly be looking to build on last year’s all-star year.
Matt Bowen has proven himself as a standout athlete on the gridiron as well as the court. Bowen, a starter since his sophomore year, put in a strong case for a SSL All Star recognition last year, and is one of the Falcon’s key offensive players, but also pulls his weight on defense.
While the Falcon’s are loaded with senior players in all positions, Coach Clark cites their main weakness in their experience, with only Ryan Hendricks, Matt Bowen, Nick Santos, Gabe Tellez, and Shea Eaton seeing significant varsity minutes last year. However, Clark, a phenomenal basketball player himself, has proved that he knows how to get the best out of his players in his two years of coaching at Mashpee High School

“Our diversity in skill sets allow us to adjust on the fly very fluidly when different situations present themselves.”
With the influx of seniors making the cut on the varsity team this year, many underclassman players will have to wait another year before they get their first varsity minutes, but there are a few who should receive good minutes this year. Coach Clark is looking towards juniors Kevaughn Blackwood and Brady Johnston, as well as sophomores Jack Spencer and Sean Fancher to put in important performances this year in addition to paving the path for the program in the years to come.
When asked about the strengths of the team, Clark mentioned the flexibility and sense of urgency that his players have. “Our diversity in skill sets allow us to adjust on the fly very fluidly when different situations present themselves,” he said. In addition to his team being dynamic and unpredictable for opponents, he also made note of the commitment and unity in his squad. “Guys are dedicated and like to stay late at practice when they have the opportunity.”
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, fans will not be able to attend the games this year, but will be able to watch the action live on the Mashpee Athletics Youtube channel.
With the South Shore League being known for its competitive nature and nail-biter games, the whole season should be an entertaining one, but if you ask Hendricks, the most anticipated game this season will be away at Cohasset on January 29. He said, “There has always been a rivalry between the two of us in both football and basketball, and just the high intensity that this game brings is so fun to be a part of.”
