Behind every great team there are great captains. Mashpee Middle/High School’s softball captains are Jaylynn Merkman, Samantha Fraser, and Madison Clifford. Their motto for this season is “Get it Done.” The team’s first game would have been on Friday against Pope John Paul but it was postponed, their makeup game is May 2 on Monday. They are determined to make it to tournament this year and feel like their team is capable. The captains feel good about this season. The captains were really good this year about starting up captain’s practices together. Although some of the team members were playing winter sports, the team kept a consistent schedule and came together pretty early.
As a team they are looking forward to wins all across the board not just a specific game, but they do have games they are anticipating. Sam said: “I think we don’t look at it like we want to beat certain teams, we’re just looking to get wins.” Although they are looking for wins all across the board teams they could consider rivals are Monomoy and Sturgis and now Pope John Paul. A lot of girls they have played with in the winter and summer are on Sturgis and Monomoy teams. They were really excited to play PJP on Friday, and Sam can’t wait to play Carver. They are nervous about playing East Bridgewater and Abington because they are the top two teams in the league but still feel like they are capable this year to beat them.
While being confident they are also able to stay humble and recognize their tough losses last year and work on their weaknesses. As a team they are, right now, working on finding their strengths and weaknesses. Once they pinpoint them they’re going to work together to fix them. The team, as a whole, is great, the captains said. They all are able to work together and get along. There aren’t any bad attitudes on the team. Although they have fun they are still able to remain respectful and focused. They are a lot of returning players this season.
Some things that Madison remembers from last season was being injured and how it affected her and the team. “I saw many different things that would bring us down. I tried to be there for the team and try to give positive attitudes along with other people,” she said.
Some of Jaylynn, Sam, and Maddie’s responsibilities are keeping the players positive and keeping their heads up even through losses and setbacks. They have realized that the team tends to snowball, making setbacks pile up, and to keep that from happening they just have to fix any problems that they have and keep working. They are, obviously, huge role models for the team. They find it easy to be captains for this team because of how many girls have played together for so long and how they get along.
Work that the captains do outside of the Softball season involve playing off season and doing other sports. Maddie does cheerleading, for both fall and winter. Jaylynn plays softball at the Bridgewater Dome. Sam plays basketball and is a goalie for the Mashpee field hockey team.
