Senior Ben Bohnenberger made the commitment to play football at Colgate University this past August. Offered a full scholarship, Ben will be a member of Colgate’s Division 1 athletic community in the fall of 2018.
Ben’s college search has been different than most students. In his junior year, he realized his passion to play, and decided to try and play college football. From then, he sent football highlight tapes to coaches. To him, the highlight tapes were important to gain exposure to college coaches. His college visits started earlier than most other people’s, and his mindset when looking at schools was a balance between education and football.

In February of 2017, Ben received an invitation to The Nike Opening, a highly competitive showcase. The showcase was in April. Ben knew the competition would be with other prospective Division 1 athletes and would be the ultimate opportunity for exposure and recruitment. Ben recalled his experience of The Opening, “The competition was amazing. There were Division 1 and NFL prospects there.”
He went to various football camps such as Villanova, Dartmouth, Boston College, Fordham, West Point, and Lafayette. He did this in hopes of being recruited. By the summer between junior and senior year, Ben had multiple offers and two full scholarships: West Point Academy and Colgate University. Both schools have Division 1 programs.
Among the universities, Ben chose to attend Colgate due to its appealing campus, rigorous academics, and great coaching staff. To him, Colgate is a school that he wouldn’t be able to attend if he wasn’t planning to play football in college.
In the future, Ben hopes that his college experience at Colgate includes meeting new people, competing at a higher level of play, and being able to focus on the things he likes.
