Students at Mashpee High School placed their bid for a number earlier this month. Since they are not residents of Falmouth, the students names were placed in a competitive lottery, meaning their spot in the race was not definite. “I was super nervous that I wasn’t gonna get a number. This is my first year running and I know a lot of people don’t get them,” stated Mary Hachey, a sophomore at Mashpee. Ben Kennedy is a freshman and he said, “The anticipation of waiting for a number is almost like waiting for an important test score to be released.”
Students all know of the race and have for years. “It’s a big event here on Cape Cod,” Mary said. According to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, the FRR started off with only 93 participants, most being local athletes. The race is international for students and adults older than ten years of age. “In a world where race, nationality, religion, and other discriminatory features are judged constantly, I think it is great that everyone can run this race...everyone has a chance of being able to cross that finish line. It’s pretty cool that this will be happening in our own backyard,” Ben stated.
Along the course, spectators help cool those who pass by down. “Getting sprayed feels so good especially if it’s a hot day,” Mashpee junior Emily Franks said. “Also, everyone cheers you on, and it really helps you get through the race."
“This summer, I plan to be attending multiple soccer training camps, which help my endurance and fitness, and keeping up with my daily gym runs. Running with friends is always fun, and I plan to do that as well,” Emily said on her future training. Freshman Alinna Hanna plans to train as well. “I will go on runs and will add more miles to each run each week.”
The Falmouth Road Race takes place a few days before pre-seasons start for fall sports at Mashpee, about two weeks before the 2018-2019 school year. “I’m thrilled that my training for the road race will help...with my training for soccer, because now I’ll have double the motivation to get out there and train,” stated Ben.
Runners have until June 1 to redeem their code for the road race. Between then and August 19, there will be family walks, volunteer days, and fitness expos to prepare for the 46th annual Falmouth Road Race. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of running seven miles,” Mary stated.
